Ad for Mum deodorant cream (June 1926, U.S.A.) Mum's a good name for a deodorant, and a good nickname for this museum for the same reason: "Mum's the word," which means "Don't say anything! It's secret!" Menstruation, for example. See another woman, but stranger looking, also put the "Shh!" finger to her lips. According to the Gilbreth report (1927), some women used the cream on menstrual pads not only as a deodorant but to reduce the chafing of the gauze that usually covered them, a great problem in the 1920s and before. The ad mentions this use in the third paragraph. I went through a contortion to get MUM to make sense for this museum, but it comes from MUseum of Menstruation. MOM makes more sense, but I wasn't looking for a connection to mother (even though many English speakers say mum for mother; I don't), simply the opportunity to say "MUM's the word!" about menstruation.
