More about masturbation:
The Science of a New Life, by John Cowan, M. D. (1875) - The Sexual System and Its Derangements, by Dr. E. C. Abbey (1882) - Plain Facts for Old and Young: Embracing the Natural History and Hygiene of Organic Life, by J. H. Kellogg, M.D., (1892) - Dr. R. V. Pierce's "Spermatorrhea" section of The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser (63rd edition, 1895) - Rachel Maines wrote a book about other doctors' masturbating their patients, male and female, as a treatment, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: The Technology of Orgasm: "Hysteria," the Vibrator, and Women's Sexual Satisfaction (Johns Hopkins Press, 1999)

Gynecology,
by Howard A. Kelly, A. B., M.D., LL. D. (1928, New York, New York, U. S. A.)
(These articles are by Esther Loring Richards, based on Adolf Meyer's genetic-dynamic theory)

Dr. Howard Kelly was the first professor of gynecology at the Johns Hopkins Medical School, in the late 19th century, and helped the transition from old-fashioned medicine to scientific gynecology. Here he is in action (at the bottom of the page), working on Dr. Thomas Cullen, the second professor of gynecology at Hopkins, who is posing as a woman (you have to see it).

Kelly's Gynecology was a standard work and experienced many editions. In this edition it non-fanatically explains and treats masturbation very differently from the older authors in the links, above. I think you will find the article on menstruation and mental health interesting, which also shows modern thinking.

The title page.

This is the end of the preface, an old-fashioned and moving statement.
