Saba menstrual pad ad for teens, about 1975

This Saba menstrual napkin ad, from a Danish magazine, about 1975, is more open than American ads from the time, but relies on the same girl-to-girl advice and concern about boys. Read about the company that made this pad, and see a bit of its museum exhibit celebrating their 50th anniversary!

The story below is obvious: by using the new brand of sanitary napkin - not the old-fashioned one - she feels safer and more comfortable, especially with Kim, the hunk she's dancing with. What is interesting for Americans is that she rides a bicycle to the dance, hoping that Kim's there, and that the music lyrics are English, showing the influence of English-language popular culture. Probably most Danes would understand the words. (Apparently some courses in Danish universities are taught in English.)

Note also that the lyrics, "For you alone," could mean that her Saba pad is for herself alone, meaning that it is not detectable by Kim.

Kim asks her out, by the way.

What a reader will never see in an American publication is a bare-breasted girl looking into her underpants at a menstrual pad! Playboy wouldn't show that! Northern Europeans seem to be more comfortable with their bodies.

This is a very large file and downloads slowly!
