Kleenex wipe tissue & Kotex menstrual pad ad, Liberty magazine,
Sept. 3, 1932, U.S.A.

Kimberly-Clark invented Kleenex (for cleaning, obviously) and Kotex, the former several years after the menstrual pad (read more about Kleenex).

The text mentions the evil competition, probably Modess, which in extraordinary ads with extraordinarily thin women appealed to customers' desire to cover up all signs of the pad. Modess had a long history of showing frosty women in high fashion (ending here, basically), who of course wanted nothing obviously to do with bleeding, which might ruin their clothes, among other things. Kotex ads were more cheerful, although this famous one wasn't and not for the model, either.

Kimberly-Clark made both products from Cellucotton, about which read more in early newspaper articles.
