Midol menstrual pain & PMS reliever tins, U.S.A.,
1911-1970s?
1911

Midol started out to relieve headaches, then hiccups, then - well, I'll let the retired teacher who found these boxes (and revealing ads) speak:

Midol started out as a headache tablet, then it was advertised as a cure for hiccups, then finally, it was advertised for menstrual pain and competed with Kotex Kurb tablets. I can't help but wonder if the ingredients changed along the way [yes, they did, as you can read on the tins]. . . . The first price in ads was 10 tablets for 25c then 10 tablets for 50c then the price went down to 40c for 12 tablets in 1940 and stayed the same price and box until 1960. The new box started in 1961 (see ads) and continued at least through the 60's but I don't know when it changed again. I remember that box myself: it had a blue paper liner, plus I remember the series of ads I attach that rotated different pictures and names through the basic ads.

Much of the information, including dates, on the following pages comes from the donor. All but one box are missing pills and all might be missing other contents. I show everything that came with the donation.

I thank the retired teacher who generously sent these tins and other items and information!

Below: The outside of the 1911 open metal box, pill-containing bottom at top, measures 2.3/4 x 1 3/16 x 1/4" (6.8 x 3 x 0.5 cm) . The words "Midol 10 tablets" are in relief.
The stamped circular design on the top reads GENERAL DRUG CO NEW YORK, N.Y.
The box came empty but the donor wrote that the inside of the bottom section would have had a black piece of paper lining it like the ones in the following boxes.
