The Art of Menstruation at the Museum of Menstruation and Women's Health

The artist writes,
This . . . painting was inspired by a friend of mine who went through post partum depression. She couldn't even get off the couch to feed her baby son. So the earth reflects the depression and lack of joy she was feeling. But she did get better so the sky is the sign of hope for everyone who goes through this to see.

"Menopause Landscape"

Coni Minneci is a western N.Y. regional artist and landscape workshop teacher at Partners In Art/Studio & Gallery, in North Tonawanda. She received a B.A. in graphic design from State University College, Buffalo, N.Y., and a B.A. in studio arts from SUNY Empire College. Coni has had numerous group and solo exhibits regionally, including at Castellani Museum at Niagara University, Virginia Weiss Gallery at Empire College, and Carnegie Art Center. Her work is available at Eminent Design Inc., Buffalo, N.Y.

Coni's landscape work reflects her experience of place, time and atmosphere and are rooted in the Hudson River School Style. Her landscape work is often fused with futurism, surrealism, feminist expressionism.

Artist's Statement

Using landscape as a way to express my experience of menopause, I painted in oil. Years of peri-menopause led to abrupt changes, wet and fertile to dry. Extreme anxiety attacks, hypoglycemia, thyroid dysfunction, vaginal changes, constant racing heart pattern and hot flashes, osteopenia. No hormone replacement therapy for personal reasons.

Yes: beta-blockers, synthroid, fosomax.

Four years later: yes, synthroid, fosomax; no, beta-blockers.

Yes, natural vitamins, homeopathy.

Post-menopause: no monthly periods, no mood swings, no pain from cramps, no bloating, anxiety, no chance of conceiving.

Left is sensitivity to hot and cold, a clearer mind to contemplate a chance to achieve new goals, explore the world and to appreciate being alive!!!
